Lille, an attractive city and a booming economy!

Lille, the most Flemish of all French cities, will win you over with its colourful architecture and its warm welcome. At the heart of the Euroregion, the Nord-Pas-de-Calais capital has all the ingredients for a successful visit: 1,000 of fascinating history, great museums including the Palais des Beaux-Arts, 2nd largest museum in France after the Louvre, welcoming boutiques, fabulous cuisine. Here more than anywhere else in France, Flemish art is apparent in the façades of the buildings and also in the sometimes unpronounceable gastronomic specialties... potjevleesh, waterzoï, etc...

In Lille Old Town, on the Grand'Place and in many of the city's central districts, Lille has successfully reconciled this flourishing art - the Vieille Bourse is the most perfect example - with all the refinement of French architecture. The Lillois rows - streets of tall, narrow identical houses - reflect the influence of French art which flourished following Louis 14th's conquest of the city in 1667.

Neither do the Vauban Citadel, the Grand'Garde or the Porte de Paris manage to entirely remove the sense of attachment that the Lille people have to their independence, which they have unquestionably retained despite the influence of three different systems of government. By turns capital of the earldom of Flanders then the Duchy of Burgundy, Lille also belonged to the Spanish Netherlands..

Thanks to its business quarter and its two stations where dozens of TGV trains interconnect each day, Lille is now enjoying its status as capital of the heart of European business and trade.

Getting to Lille

Lille has two major stations in its centre, both served by the metro and the tram: Lille-Flanders (TER and TGV direct to Paris) and Lille-Europe (Eurostar for London and Brussels and TGV direct to Paris and other French cities). The international airport of Lille-Lesquin (LIL) is 10 kilometres from the city. You can fly to over 60 national and international destinations. A shuttle bus links the airport and the city centre (journey time: 20 minutes). For those who are coming by car, Lille is located at the crossroads of 6 European motorways.

Visit Lille

Lille Old Town is home to some magnificent historical sites and buildings. Stroll through its streets to discover the Grand-Place, la Vieille Bourse, the City Hall and its belfry, the Grand-Garde, the Rihour palace and the cathedral of Notre-Dame de la Treille. As for food, the people of the north have a reputation for being people who enjoy the good things in life. It's not surprising then to find that there are over 1,000 restaurants in the city!
